Summary of Position

Working with program staff and contracted professionals, Just Buffalo’s Writing Center Coordinator will serve as a teaching artist & writing role model for teens involved with JB’s Writing Center (JBWC). Along with access to writing workshops, literary events, and assistance with writing projects, the JBWC provides young writers ages 12-18 with opportunities to learn from groundbreaking authors & are provided platforms to share their work and talents. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a writing role model /teaching artist and leading/co-facilitating writing workshops, field trips, and other activities as needed at the JBWC
  • Working closely with staff to implement JBWC programming goals including weekly creative writing workshops (Tues–Thurs afternoons) as well as community & evening events
  • Overseeing the physical JBWC space to ensure that it is inspiring, welcoming, and well-maintained
  • Support ongoing administrative duties including attendance tracking and evaluation tools
  • Assisting with outreach and program promotion throughout the community

Qualifications

  • Experienced & dynamic teacher of writing committed to creating a safer space for young people to write, learn, connect, and grow
  • Enthusiastic and caring mentor, striving to ensure youth feel comfortable, seen, empowered, and worthy
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and self-motivated to take initiative when needed
  • Ability to work collaboratively & equitably with individuals and groups including teaching artists, students, volunteers, community members, and collaborators
  • Flexibility & positivity when working in a fast-paced environment

If you’re new to the not-for-profit sector but have excellent teaching experience and/or an active creative writing practice, we welcome you to apply.

Salary & Benefits

This is a part-time (24 hours per week) hourly position, regularly scheduled from Tuesday thru Thursday (11am–7pm) with some weekend hours as needed. The salary range for this position is $17 to $22/hour based on experience. Benefits include:

  • 13 paid holidays
  • 3 weeks of paid vacation + 2 weeks when the office is closed
  • Sick time (accrued)
  • Cell phone and/or laptop for business use (based on eligibility)
