Our Response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak

As a precaution to help limit the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and care for our community, Just Buffalo Literary Center has postponed a number of events, and we will follow the guidance of Buffalo Public Schools in terms of Just Buffalo Writing Center programming.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

At Just Buffalo Literary Center, we believe that reading and writing are transformative acts.

In a city that remains one of the most segregated in our nation with above average rates of racial discrimination and systemic poverty, Just Buffalo recognizes that power and decision-making control have been significantly less available to people of color, immigrants and refugees, young adults, those who are LGBTQIA+, those with language barriers, people with disabilities, and the economically disadvantaged.

Our DEI Action Plan

We are committed to working harder to create a workspace and programming environment which gives opportunity and celebrates the unique perspective and individual talents of all people. We will be more intentional and proactive in our efforts to disrupt outdated power structures in the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.

This work is ongoing and will grow with the organization. Today, we focus our actions on:

  • Intentionally removing barriers to participation and access
  • Building coalitions with Black, Indigenous, and community partners of color
  • Mentoring the next generation of leaders
  • Prioritizing the recruitment of board, staff, and teaching artists of color
  • Actively supporting anti-racism advocacy efforts
