Just Buffalo Literary Center affirms our commitment to anti-racism in our mission of strengthening communities through literature, and we affirm our ongoing support of the fight for the safety and well-being of Black lives everywhere. We join our community in demanding justice for the lives lost to murder by police—including in our home city of Buffalo. We also recognize that racial violence is not limited to police brutality; but rather, the entire structure of this country has been built on systems of institutionalized racism which affect every aspect of life.
Black Lives Matter.
As a literary center, we are especially aware of the power of words—to summon grief and rage, joy and love, action and change. For 45 years, Just Buffalo has sought to push against the structures of systemic racism through our work, and we reaffirm that commitment to support and elevate the voices of Black writers and artists in all of our programming and decision-making. We feel deep gratitude and humility to work, live, create, and share art as a part of this community of activists, artists, and citizens committed to racial and social justice.
This is a time that offers the possibility of real transformation. There are so many ways to get involved, and there’s a role for every person and organization to play.
