18 Jul Announcing the 2022 JBWC Youth Fellows
We are thrilled to announce the 2022 Just Buffalo Writing Center Youth Fellows, selected by novelist and final judge Gabriel Bump: Liam Cobb of Buffalo, NY and Angelina Tang of East Amherst, NY. Congratulations, Liam & Angelina!
Liam is a rising senior at City Honors School at Fosdick-Masten Park with a passion for convoluted philosophy, poetry and literature. During the fellowship, Liam plans to conduct interviews and research to build an oral history of the local labor movement surrounding the 1978 closure of the Lackawanna Bethlehem Steel Plant, culminating in a multimedia final project that conveys the movement’s emotional, artistic and historiographical power, solidarity and importance.
Angelina is a rising junior at Williamsville East High School; she is an avid prose writer who plans to self-publish her first novel, “Birds Playing God,” next year. During the fellowship, Angelina will be writing a novella about the hospital life and gradual recovery of a girl with schizophrenia, exploring themes of friendship, family, trauma and healing using flora and fauna symbolism and Chinese cultural influences.
In addition to naming Liam and Angelina as this year’s fellows, Jonah Ruddock was honored as runner-up, and seven writers were honored as finalists from the impressive pool of young applicants (below, in alphabetical order):
- Abuk Aleu
- Elle Bader-Gregory
- Theodore Bellavia-Frank
- Mia Kirisits
- Anna Kubiak

A huge thank you to novelist & JB teaching artist Gabriel Bump for serving as this year’s final judge.
