In past workshops we have studied the core elements of sequential art by dissecting comics and figuring out what makes them tick. Now that we’re familiar with the the principles and mechanics of cartoon storytelling it’s time to find out, what happens when you break all the rules? Join local cartoonist Max Weiss in an exploration of the connection between word and image. We will draw on influences such as poetry and modern art and with any luck, create some thing new in the process.

This workshop is FREE, aimed at young students aged 12–18, and limited to 12 participants.

About the Teaching Artist
Max Weiss - Writers in Education Teaching Artist - Just Buffalo Literary Center

Max Weiss is a Buffalo native cartoonist and songwriter whose work has appeared in Pukumber, Demonyms, and The Boston Hassle. He received a BA in English Literature and Art Education at the University of Vermont in 2012. He has self-released eight albums of independent music and performs locally as one half of the avant-garde pop group Welks Mice. His first graphic novel, Papa Time, was published by Hypnotic Dog Press.
