Canticle by Zi Daniel

can’t the world go without us, just for a second?
just for the rest of time?
the world would still turn, little dove,
with you and me gone
so i suggest a picnic, deep in the woods,
where we will propose a toast,
to long life
to everlasting piece
to warmth within each other
where we will finish with a siesta,
sleeping
on the forest floor we’ll wait
until we’re ready to
rejoin the world of humans.
but the whole time the deer will walk past our
sleeping bodies
the birds will look down on us
our chests moving tirelessly, gently up and down
in and out
and the flowers with their slow explosions
of budding color, will grow just a bit
and the creek will giggle, joyful at our serenity
i would sleep beside you forever
i would sleep beside you
dead
