Three Poems by 2021 JBWC Youth Fellow Sophie Zhu

Sophie Zhu
Presenting a selection of three poems by 2021 JBWC Youth Fellow Sophie Zhu. Says Sophie, “I hope you keep three phrases in mind while reading these poems: the act of being human, a video game of syllables, Wolfgang Tillmans, and your people.”

Says poet Christina Vega-Westhoff of Sophie’s work, “This is writing ‘to speak your tongue’s knot open.’ Aware of its powers, creating space for others, morphing, shapeshifting. I read books in these pieces, their forms intermingling—informing—dialoguing. As Sophie writes, ‘Language becomes the figurative, then fugitive, of my body.’”

Each summer, the Just Buffalo Writing Center Youth Fellowship offers a motivated young writer the opportunity to develop their craft and explore professional avenues within the literary arts. Applications for the 2022 Youth Fellowship are open through June 6, 2022. Learn more & apply.
