Join a JBLC Committee or the Board of Directors

Our volunteer board members provide governance oversight for the mission, goals, growth, & financial health of the organization. It is our responsibility to guide JBLC towards a sustainable future by adopting and ensuring compliance to sound ethical, legal, & financial policies, as well as adequate resources to advance our mission.

Board service provides:

  • Unique opportunities to contribute to the success & sustainability of JBLC serve your community
  • Make a positive impact on the lives of readers, writers & citizens of all ages
  • Expand your network & meet people with similar interests

Requirements to Serve on the JBLC Board

Directors serve 3-year terms (eligible to be renewed for two additional terms) and receive no financial compensation for their service.

We are in the process of identifying motivated board candidates who fully support and embody Just Buffalo Literary Center’s mission and are willing to serve as loyal ambassadors for our organization. Responsibilities include the following activities.

Attending Board Meetings

The Board of Directors meets 5x per year. Members are expected to attend virtually or in-person, arrive prepared, and participate actively.

Supporting Programs & Special Events

JBLC’s signature programs—BABEL Author Series, JB Writing Center, Silo City Reading Series & more—hold events throughout the year to facilitate community outreach. Board members are encouraged to attend at least one event per quarter.

Board Giving

JBLC is financed by admissions, grants, foundation support, sponsorships, and charitable giving. Board members are asked to make an annual commitment to prioritize JBLC as one of their top 3 charities with a gift that is meaningful to them.

Serving on Committees

Our Board of Directors exercises its leadership function via standing committees focused on Development, Audit & Finance, Governance, Investment, and Marketing as well as ad hoc committees established as needed. Members are expected to actively serve on at least one committee, but not all of our committees require board membership. Committee service is an excellent way to learn more about board service and contribute to JBLC’s essential mission.

Duty of Loyalty

When acting on behalf of JBLC, board members must put aside personal and professional interests for the best interest of the organization. Directors are asked to inform the Board of any conflict of interest and are required to hold as confidential information regarding JBLC obtained pursuant to their board service.
