Stepping Into Your Light

JBWC is thrilled to present a new, digital publication: Stepping Into Your Light

This journey began in October 2023, with a young writers and artists visiting visual artist Julia Bottoms‘ exhibition at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, A Light Under the Bushel. Bottoms has been selected to create a sculpture of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first Black woman to run for United States president. The statue will be displayed at Forest Lawn Cemetery, where Chisholm is buried.

Both Bottoms and Chisholm have used their platforms to emphasize the importance of representation, inclusion, and equity, and to advocate for their community. With that purpose in mind, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Just Buffalo Literary Center, and Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center invited students from both programs to make creative writing and multimedia video projects in which they consider what “stepping into their light” means to them.

Next, young, digital artists with Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology took these creations and gave them a thoughtful, artfully-crafted home in the publication you are about to explore.
