Visit the underworld through ancient poems like The Descent of Inanna and Dante’s Inferno, as well as passages from Robert Macfarlane’s UnderLand, then imagine your own descent. What would it look and sound like? Why might you go? Who else is there? White Rabbits? Flatterers? Your sister?
Then consider rising up. What, specifically, lightens and elevates you? We’ll look at some examples of ecstatic poetry and make our own earthly paradise through words.

Sherry Robbins is a poet, teaching artist, and long-time yoga instructor. Her publications include the full-length collections, Or, the Whale (BlazeVOX Books) and Under World; the chapbook, Snapshots of Paradise; and numerous literary journals and anthologies including Denver Quarterly, Salmagundi, and Earth’s Daughters. She was one of 24 writers featured in the Poets at Work anthology alongside of Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton, Robert Creeley, and Sonia Sanchez. Named New York State Teaching Artist of the Year in 2005, she has served as an arts education consultant for the University of Coimbra in Portugal, and for Portugal’s Belgais Center for the Study of Arts.
