The Sidewalk’s Dream
written by Mathias Svalina
I am chasing a silly skunk. It’s a game. If I catch the skunk then I win. The skunk keeps dropping little things to distract me from the chase, baseballs, comic books, pouches filled with jingling things, sheet music to unheard music. As I pass each dropped thing, I think of the world in which I could play with that ball, the world in which I could play that music on a trumpet, the world in which I could open a pouch. And each world seems wonderful, each world seems plausible, but I continue to chase the skunk, the skunk giggling & goofing. I move through this world as cement. I make space for people to walk safely through the rain. This is me. This is my world. I’m giving it all I’ve got.
