A Movable Education: Chang-rae Lee and the Hero’s Journey (Hybrid)

What would you do if you had the opportunity to leave your life behind? Can one person transform your ordinary cares into limitless possibilities? Have you ever wanted to become the hero of your own story? Do journeys make heroes from ordinary people?

The hero’s journey is a quintessential literary archetype. Novelist Chang-rae Lee contemporizes the hero’s journey with exciting and eccentric characters, bold descriptive language, and circumstances befitting our modern social climate. This writing workshop, for youth and led by youth, held the week before the Chang-Rae Lee BABEL event, will explore in-depth the writing style of the author and his featured work, My Year Abroad

Participants will read and respond creatively to selected excerpts from the text and brainstorm questions to ask the author.

This workshop is FREE, aimed at young students aged 12–18, and limited to 10 in-person participants with the option to join virtually.

  • COVID SAFETY: We’ll be following social distancing protocol, taking temperatures, and providing masks and sanitizer as needed.
  • ACCESSIBILITY NOTE: If you have any questions/issues accessing any of these opportunities, please let us know and we will work with you to make sure you can participate.
