Diplomacy, Dissected Youth-Led Workshop (Hybrid)
Led by JBWC Youth Ambassadors Sophie Zhu, Keira VanDerBeck, and Abuk Aleu
Today and throughout history, the power that monolithic political bodies have on us – as humans, as citizens, and as animals – has always held a hint of an overbearing dominion. For instance, think US state-redacted documents. Think tribunal court records freeing a war criminal. Think the Palmer raids. In this workshop, we will use the Internet to collect primary documentation on a historical topic of our choice, then put a visual spin on them. Examples include using black Sharpie to “erase” text from a government glossary, overlaying Islamophobic laws and Muslim immigrant narratives, or writing a new poem that sources text from state legislation – all forms of resistance. Inspired by Solmaz Sharif’s collection Look.
This workshop is FREE, aimed at young students aged 12–18, and limited to 10 in-person participants with the option to join virtually.
