Curious Essays with Laura Marris

Curious Essays with Laura Marris (virtual)

In this two-part writing workshop, we will explore the unfolding beauty of the essay form and the ways it can capture your curiosity on the page. Our first session will be focused on how essays begin, inviting us to question, develop associations, and listen to the self. The second session will build on those beginnings to deepen our opinions and complicate first impressions, moving towards surprise, or even epiphany. Along the way, we’ll use writing exercises to try out various craft techniques for creative essays–whether they’re lyrical, critical, personal, or all of the above. We’ll look at transitions, pacing, humor, and the endlessly inventive unit of the paragraph. Each participant will leave the workshop with the arc of a brand new essay-to-be.
