Playwright Neil Wechsler and composer Nathan Heidelberger discuss their ongoing collaboration, The Faust Project, an adaptation of both parts of Goethe’s Faust. The talk will focus on the adaptation process, particularly the unique challenges that come with trying to condense Goethe’s sweeping original—about seventeen hours’ worth of theater—down to a sixty-minute play for just four actors with musical accompaniment. A close look at one scene will illustrate the process of preparing the script while also highlighting the role of music in the project. Students will be invited to adapt their own Faust scene, working from multiple English translations of Goethe’s original text. The final presentations of The Faust Project will take place on February 3 and 4, 2017, at the Burchfield Penny Art Center, with support from the UB Creative Arts Initiative.
This talk is FREE, aimed at young students aged 12–18, and limited to 12 participants. No registration required.
