Ta-Nehisi Coates’s ongoing run of Marvel’s Black Panther comics was the inspiration for The Wakanda Alliance, a comic reading and exploration workshop developed to help readers explore the historical context behind Marvel’s most famous African heroes—the Black Panther, T’Challa, and his sister, Shuri—and the comics’ cultural references to the African diaspora. The Wakanda Alliance gets families engaged in reading, arts, and team building activities, achieving the goal of a stronger, smarter, and inspired community. The Wakanda Alliance hosts weekend workshops and school-based activities, solidifying an engaging role in the local WNY community and beyond.

In this event, join The Wakanda Alliance as we journey through the depth and impact of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Black Panther series The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda through group reading, visualization exercises, and Afrofuturist thought shaping, developing deeper conversations around Blackness, Sci-Fi, and Afrofuturism.

About the Teaching Artist

The Wakanda Alliance is a comic reading and exploration workshop, developed to help readers explore the historical context behind Marvel’s most famous African heroes: the Black Panther, T’Challa, and his sister, Shuri. We chose these titles because we understood how to connect their cultural references to the African diaspora to their curious readers. Through the Wakanda Alliance, we get families engaged in reading, arts, and team building activities, achieving the goal of a stronger, smarter, and inspired community. The Wakanda Alliance hosts weekend workshops and school-based activities, solidifying an engaging role in the local WNY community and beyond.
