Just Buffalo Fellowships

Throughout its history, Just Buffalo has offered a number of fellowships to poets and writers to help foster the future of creative writing—both here in Western New York and around the world.

The JB Poetry Fellowship

Each year, Just Buffalo invites adult poets of all ages and stages of their career to apply for its Poetry Fellowship, which gives one talented writer a cash stipend to live and write in one of the nation’s most vibrant literary cities, plus an opportunity to read at an event curated by Just Buffalo Literary Center.

The Poetry Fellowship Award

  • A cash stipend ($2,000 in 2026)
  • One month of free lodging during August in a beautiful apartment in one of Buffalo’s most vibrant neighborhoods
  • An opportunity to read at the Silo City Reading Series

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be 21 years or older
  • A completed application must be received by February 28, 2026 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time 
  • Past or present employees of Just Buffalo Literary Center are NOT eligible to apply

We are thrilled to announce the winner of the 2025 Poetry Fellowship: Nabila Lovelace of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Their first book Sons of Achilles is available from YesYes Books. Lovelace will visit Buffalo this August for a writing residency and read at the August 30 Silo City Reading Series event.

The JBWC Youth Fellowship

The Just Buffalo Writing Center Youth Fellowship offers 1-2 motivated young writer(s) the opportunity to develop their craft and explore professional avenues within the literary arts.

The JBWC Youth Fellowship Award

The selected fellow(s) will work with a mentor, be encouraged to develop their unique voice as a creative writer and thinker, and present a creative writing project to be completed over the course of the summer. The fellowship, which takes place during July and August each year, includes a $1,200 stipend.

Criteria for Eligibility

  • Open to WNY-based youth (ages 15-18)
  • All genres are welcome, including fiction, non-fiction, playwriting, or poetry
  • The applicant should demonstrate active engagement as a writer
  • Only one proposal may be submitted per person—joint applications or collaborations are not permitted
  • There are no educational requirements

The JBWC Youth Ambassadors Program

The Just Buffalo Writing Center encourages young writers that are involved with the JBWC (ages 12–18) to apply to take part in our Youth Ambassador Program. Youth Ambassadors have the unique opportunity to play an integral role in the development and success of the JBWC’s programs and events.

The JBWC Youth Ambassadors Award

As a Youth Ambassador, you will be able to:

  • Meet and write alongside local and nationally recognized writers
  • Write Made-To-Order poems for people from all over the country
  • Lead writing activities and workshops at the JBWC and in the community
  • Create and organize youth art events and special JBWC parties and field trips
  • Perform your work at countless community events
  • Advocate for the literary arts before the Erie County Legislature
  • Eat countless slices of pizza and snacks
  • Be PAID for many of these tasks (not including the pizza eating)

Youth Ambassador opportunities and experiences will not only help you become a better writer and leader—it will open new doors of opportunity as you explore the literary arts, both professionally and artistically.
