“This Writing Is Really Moving: Writing with the Whole Body” Often, we think of writing as something that we do with our minds. We imagine that our hands operate like pieces of mind-recording equipment, typing or writing out the contents of our minds. But what if our hands, and our bodies, do more than just record our thoughts? What if our bodies shape our thoughts and give us our words? In this workshop, we’ll use body movements and sensory experiments to study how our bodies and minds work together when we write.

“Sound: Poetry” Sound. It’s a fundamental element of poetic language; it can be its own poetry. Writers in this workshop will be sound alchemists: listening to & writing about sounds, recording, mixing & manipulating sounds, creating & arranging “found sounds” from random objects, and working a strange experimental device, the POEMATIC 9000.

“Science Fiction’s Infinite Futures” Science Fiction opens a window into the future. We’ll start this workshop by asking a simple question: What might those futures look like? Should science fiction try to predict what will probably happen? What should or shouldn’t happen? Or intriguing alternate universes that play by different rules than our own? We’ll also explore a few short pieces of futuristic writing and work on producing our own science fiction. Writers of any genre welcome—poetry, fiction, and graphic novels!
