Upcoming Literary Events in Buffalo

Like all art, poetry bridges communities and fosters tolerance. BCRS provides a forum for cultural differences and understanding while helping writers find inspiration and improve their craft.

On Sunday, April 21, at 2pm, Sam Magavern and Monica Angle will launch their new book, Ovid’s Creek, at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The book, published by BlazeVOX, combines 56 poems with 48 images. The event will start in the BPAC auditorium with a reading and slide show; it will continue with a book signing and reception upstairs at BPAC. The event is free and open to the public.

"Heavy" Reflections provides community members a continuing opportunity to reflect deeply on their personal experiences and on how they relate to Kiese Laymon’s memoir and BABEL discussion.

Join award-winning author Kiese Laymon and host Barbara Cole for an in-depth and in-person discussion about his work and his book, Heavy.

The National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC) and Just Buffalo Literary Center cordially invite you to participate in a virtual racial healing circle.

Join us for an evening of readings from poets Asiya Wadud & Travis Sharp, with a musical performance from Katie Weismann.

A writer’s open mic night featuring live music and art accompaniment! Have you ever wondered what your poem would sound like as a song, or look like as a doodle? Come find out!  How does that work? Well, as you read your story, SCA staff artist Alisia Glasier will create an original doodle inspired by the piece, and singer-songwriter Stephen Wilger will play a song that fits the “mood” of the piece. The audience will get to experience your piece in three different mediums, and you get to go home with a souvenir piece of art.  Please join us on Wednesday May 8th from 6-8 pm for this event.
