| Interdisciplinary Performance Series Along This Way: Storytelling in the African Tradition Sponsored by: Just Buffalo Saturday, February 7, 2009 @ 2:00 PM Join Just Buffalo for an afternoon of African stories, fables, games, drumming, chants and folk songs from storytellers Karima Amin and Sharon Holley, Percussionist eddie Nicholson and vocalist Joyce Carolyn. Karima Amin is an educator, author, and consultant who works as a fulltime professional storyteller, providing performances and workshops for children and adults. Karima is the author of a children’s book, The Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends (Dorling Kindersley, 1999) and the author of several original stories which have been anthologized in African American Children’s Stories: A Treasury of Tradition and Pride (2001) and Grandma Loves You (2003). Amin’s storytelling is a longtime regular feature of local radio on Monday mornings WBLK-FM (93.7). She is a founding and performing member of Spin-A-Story-Tellers of Western New York and co-founder of Tradition Keepers: Black Storytellers of Western New York. She is also a member of the National Association of Black Storytellers, Inc. where she has served as a past Board Member and as Coordinator of the Resources Table at the National Festival of Black Storytelling. She has been invited to share stories on Goree Island in Senegal, West Africa at the “Family Reunion Project Art Festival” in December of this year. Ms. Holley is a storyteller and retired librarian in Buffalo, New York who hails from High Springs, Florida. She is a founding and performing member of Spin-A-Story-Tellers of Western New York and co-founder of Tradition Keepers: Black Storytellers of Western New York. She is also a member of the National Association of Black Storytellers, Inc. where she has served as a past Board Member and as Coordinator of the Resources Table at the National Festival of Black Storytelling. She occasionally performs with Karima Amin as “We All Storytellers.” Sowande’ Eddie Nicholson has worked with Steve Porter’s Gemini Dance Theatre, Emile Latimores’ Sounds of Echoes of Yemon Ja, African Dance, and Drum Company, Africa Foli, John Bacon Jr’s. Multi-Jazz Dimensions, and Earth Blessings Multi-Cultural Band. Vocalist Joyce Carolyn is the curator of the Interdisciplincary Performance Series.
