Tim Wendel returns to Western New York on Tuesday, May 22nd for a reading & conversation about his new book, Cancer Crossings: A Brother, His Doctors, and the Quest for a Cure to Childhood Leukemia.

Interweaving memory, research, and interviews, Wendel’s book is centrally about his brother Eric’s fight against leukemia in the mid-1960’s. The book is also relevant for anyone interested in medicine, innovation, scientific discovery, sailing, and local history. Cancer Crossings documents the struggles and triumphs the family faced during the seven years that Eric was in treatment at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo. Using the tools of an investigative reporter, the author discovers that members of the treatment team were specialists on the cutting edge of childhood cancer research, and that Eric himself was part of clinical trials overseen by pioneering doctors like James Holland, Lucius Sinks, and Donald Pinkel. As Eric learned to navigate a path through cancer with quiet resolve and preternatural courage, the family learned to sail on Lake Ontario and bonded over their efforts to navigate its unpredictable waters. By the time Eric died at age 10, he had showed the family what it meant to rise above the “pain that could be upon us, that could overwhelm us.”

Wendel’s book celebrates his brother’s life and serves as a testament to the commitment of doctors who went above and beyond expectations to transform a death sentence into an often survivable disease.
