The Buffalo Public Schools Art Education Department is deeply honored to be part of what will become another significant and historical day in our city. BABEL’s sponsorship of Toni Morrison, an American writer that influenced the thoughts and beliefs of many through her literature, sharing stories that were based in truths that were considered harrowing and controversial, is a great example of what our art educators teach to our students- that feelings and ideas can be expressed emotionally and intelligently through the art of storytelling, whether it is manifested through pen, brush, voice or movement. To be part of Ms. Morrison’s welcoming on a day that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic visit to Kleinhan’s is beyond humbling. Our K-12 students and their art teachers are thrilled to be part of this event and we can only hope that their artwork, which is inspired by the work of Ms. Morrison, the advocacy of Dr. King, and the legacy of Buffalo native Lucille Clifton, whose life intersects these American icons, brings a sense of connectedness, love and unity to those who view it. We couldn’t be more proud to be part of this BABEL event and we thank Just Buffalo Literary Center for this unique opportunity.
