Join us for this special installment of BABEL @ Betty’s: a book discussion of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric facilitated by award-winning author, Alexis De Veaux.
Passionate about the significance of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen, Alexis De Veaux is returning to Buffalo from New York City to facilitate the discussion of the award-winning work. Co-Founder of The Center for Poetic Healing, a project of Lyrical Democracies with Kathy Engel, and of the Flamboyant Ladies Theatre Company (with Gwendolen Hardwick), De Veaux (Phd) is a poet, playwright, short fiction writer, essayist and biographer whose work is nationally and internationally known. Ms. De Veaux was a member of the faculty of the University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, 1992-2013; teaching, most recently, as an associate professor of women’s and gender studies in the Department of Transnational Studies. Speaking of her decision to make the visit, De Veaux states, “It was in Buffalo, while teaching at UB, that I began to critically think about what ‘whiteness’ is and how it is antithetical to the human project. Claudia Rankine’s book is an important event because it pushes a conversation on ‘whiteness’ rather than simply one on ‘race’ (bodies of color).”
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Come enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine and a bite to eat and join the conversation!
